Look fabulous for less–and for a good cause. See how it’s done Thursday evening Nov. 7 at “Social Fabric: A Thrifted Fashion Show,” presented by Hoboken’s only charity thrift store, St. Mary Advocates Inc. The thrift store’s second-annual fashion show will feature a catwalk runway of models sporting curated trendy and classic looks chosen from the shop’s selection of chic and stylish items donated from our local community. The lineup of designer labels ranges from Kate Spade to Diane von Furstenberg, Moschino, Alice & Olivia, Jil Sander and Scotch & Soda, as well as popular names such as Anthropologie, Lucky Brand, Athleta, Guess and others.
Proceeds will benefit the St. Mary Advocates scholarship fund, which offers grants to students pursuing degrees in nursing and other health-related fields. St. Mary Advocates, a charitable group in operation in Hoboken for more than 50 years, is the umbrella nonprofit that oversees the all-volunteer charity thrift shop at 6th and Garden St. in Hoboken. The fashion-show event will offer wine and beer and small plates from local eateries, plus raffles of gift cards from local restaurants and other businesses and an auction of donated designer clothing and accessories. It will be held at 7 p.m. at the Bissinger Room up on the campus of Stevens Tech, a setting that boasts a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline. Tickets are $100 each and after the success of last year’s debut event, they are expected to sell out fast. Thrift-store aficionados are invited to wear their own thrifted favorites. The St. Mary Thrift Store provides a multipronged benefit to the community. By collecting the area’s surplus clothing and housewares, it offers bargains to families who need to stretch their dollars. In addition, it promotes sustainability by keeping apparel out of landfills, and the store is a treasure trove for thrifting enthusiasts.
