oin us for the opening reception for Buttered Roll’s new solo show, Bolivareando: Similar, Not the Same Friday. September 6 from 6-9pm. On View Sept 6 – Oct 13
Bolivareando: Similar, Not the Same is the latest major body of work by Colombian-born painter and poet Buttered Roll. Countless iterations of a character that resembles Simón Bolívar, el Libertador, populate the exhibition. He is rendered in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pen and ink — or maybe it is merely his likeness. He imitates a house plant, puts up drywall, stands on his own tongue, and considers an enlarged foot in a cavernous night while doing his best impersonation of Oedipus. As the artist writes, “Historical Bolivar (HB) and the Bolivar of Bolivareando (BB) are almost two entirely distinct entities… BB as a character, is derived from the historical figure of Bolivar, but BB is almost entirely alienated from history and from his original context. The Bolivar of Bolivareando, following this alienation, has been repurposed and recontextualized. Although he is still recognizable to some as the historical Bolivar, the Bolivar of Bolivareando is almost an entirely different being.” more details
